Don’t Let a Short Break Become a Lengthy Habit
Wow!! Wednesday again and yet another week half over already… really, where DOES the time go?
It feels like the weekend JUST ended … oh wait … I’m in Canada and last weekend was a LONG weekend, so it DID just end!! LOL
Here’s how I started MY long weekend:
Yes, its true! The guy that got ME started on my path to better health, a ripped body and a six pack was in town. And, I FINALLY got to meet him in person.
Mike Geary, author of The Truth About Six Pack Abs was in Vancouver last week on business and we hung out for an extended brunch on Friday morning.
… and YEP, he IS just that nice, just that smart, and just that interesting. I had a great time trading thoughts, ideas and stories with him.
And, while we were having brunch, he also happened to mention something I had previously been unaware of (how I missed THIS I have NO idea!):
The Truth About Six Pack Abs ALSO comes as an MP3 Audio Book!
Now THIS is a VERY valuable piece of news. I’m going to load it into my mp3 player and listen to it while I work out!
Talk about having some good motivation!!
Plus, you get the added benefit of saving time by getting your workout in while listening in and learning all the things you need to know about how to do it most effectively!
Anyway, after Mike departed I was at the front end of a long weekend where I knew I was going to take a much needed break from all things “Jackie“ … and that included working, messing around on the computer, running, working out, waking up early and even eating totally on target.
The honest truth is that I was starting to feel a little burned out emotionally, mentally and physically, and I really just needed a big ol’ break… from EVERYTHING.
So, I just let it all go in the dumper for a few days.
But here’s the interesting part: I expected to wake up on Tuesday morning totally refreshed and rarin’ to go with bucket-loads of energy and bouncing off the walls.
But I didn’t.
My first thought when I woke up (after deciding whether to throw the alarm through the window or not) was “Oh man, do I really have to go running today? Maybe I’ll skip just one more day and just really get a solid rest in, instead.”
!!!!!! WHAAAAT ?????!??!
Trust me, that surprised EVEN ME !
But, that’s just not how I roll.
So I pulled my lazy ass out of that bed, strapped on my running gear and got my butt out the door before I could start up the argument with myself.
As I walked down to the seawall I imagined that’s how a lot of good intentions must wind up falling by the wayside.
I didn’t “feel like it“.
I could have bailed.
But what about tomorrow? What if I didn’t “feel like it” again tomorrow?
And then the next day? And the next?
Before I know it I could wind up with a year’s worth of “tomorrow I’ll feel like it” and not one iota of accomplishment.
And you know what else?
When I was done I felt better. A LOT better. Emotionally, mentally AND physically. Fresh air, a little sweat, endorphins and NO GUILT. I found freedom from all the things that were making me feel crappy. And I got ‘er done even though I didn’t “feel like it“. Good for me!
And then just to hammer my own point home to myself, something else interesting happened later today …
I also had an interesting conversation with one of my clients during her session.
She had a similar weekend of ‘just screw it, I need a break‘ debauchery. And subsequently didn’t really feel all that up to our scheduled workout.
SHE could have skipped out, too. But that’s not how SHE rolls either.
She showed up and by the end of the workout we were both talking about how she felt better having gone the distance and gotten her workout in.
And, the endorphins were rockin’ her mood by then, too.
Good for her. She’s my kind of peeps.
THE MORAL OF THIS STORY IS: a “break” is fine … IF you REALLY need it… but don’t let that “break” get carried away on you and become the “habit”. You just won’t get anywhere if you let that happen.
So, once that break is over, whether you “feel like it” or NOT, get your butt out there and JUST DO IT !!! (boy, I sure do love Nike for coming up with that slogan… it just says it all)
Besides, I mean really: Who’s got time for regrets?
That’s it for today, but before you head out, make sure you grab The Truth About Six Pack Abs MP3 Audio Book.
Listen to it during your next workout and motivate the heck out of yourself … and learn stuff at the same time! GOOD stuff, too …
Mike Geary really DOES know what he’s talking about and if you don’t listen to ANYONE else, you should listen to HIM.

I totally know what you are talking about and I am a little relieved that I was not the only one! I got a chest cold this weekend so after doing a cardio session and a weight training session and a whole lot of icky hacking, I decided that I needed to take a couple of sick days to let this pass. But I’m ready for that ass-kicking this afternoon, yo!
