RANT: You’re a Personal Trainer?! SERIOUSLY?!?!
I saw something today that I absolutely must share.
I almost slapped someone today. Yes, it’s true. I was VERY tempted go make something of this situation.
The object of my ire was a fellow Personal Trainer (and I use the term ‘fellow’ verrrrrry loosely) …
I’m absolutely LIVID!!!!!!
If you ARE a Personal Trainer, don’t let me catch you training your clients this way …
… and if you’ve had the misfortune to HIRE a Personal Trainer like this guy, FIRE THEIR ASS RIGHT NOW and go get yourself someone who knows what they’re doing …
… and whatever you do, don’t let that idiot scare you off from your fitness goals or workout regime, OR make you decide that weight training is just ‘not for you’ … because it just MIGHT BE …
… with the RIGHT Personal Trainer providing you what you need, what you deserve, and WHAT YOU PAID FOR !!!!
Here’s exactly what I’m flying off the handle about:
SEE what I mean?
I mean honestly.
He’s lucky I didn’t go talk to his boss about him. It’s really unacceptable to train anyone in that manner.
Try a Personal Trainer / Online Fitness Coach that actually “GETS IT” (yes, its me) …
I have a couple of slots available at the moment (but only a couple) so hurry and sign up before they’re taken and let’s get the ball rolling right now.
I “get it” and I can help you reach your goals. Sign up here now:

i feel your passion…
i feel the same way about photography
in the sense that when new models or subjects work with me that have worked with other photographers that give them no direction or explain things to them at all…they are usually pleasantly surprised that i explain every shot in detail as to what we are trying to accomplish. i applaud you for the passion u exude in your work. :o] kudos… & btw i love vancouver…always have a great time when im there… blessings & light

Wow! Where do you even begin with a guy like that. First, call the gym manager. Explain what you saw. You’re right, there’s no reason for him being unprofessional.
Second, just because he works at the gym, doesn’t mean that he’s “educated”. He probably had to pass a test at some point to get certified. Who knows who, or if he is certified with.
Third, good job on the restraint. :)

human (??!?)!!! thanks for the comments… yes, Vancouver is great, unfortunately this Summer is being pretty awful this year. Oh well, one of the risks you take living near a gulf stream…
Todd, I know which board he had to pass thru in order to get his certification, cuz I took the same one (this gym requires that particular certification)… and to be honest I was NOT impressed with the level of education that is required in order to be able to call yourself a personal trainer. He probably had all the right knowledge, but it was the way he dealt with the client that he deserved to be fired for. Absolutely abhorrent. I was mortified.
thanks for the comments guys!

OH MY GOD GIRL – AMEN!!!!!! Thank you for putting this out there! As a fellow trainer & get your anger at idiots like that who make us look stupid. I used to work with a “trainer” who would watch her clients use extremely poor form and do exercises completely incorrectly because she was too busy gossiping about every body else in the gym. Her clients never broke a sweat or saw results because she was too busy chatting and drinking her coffee. I called the owner of the gym out on it & he said that she wasn’t certified & had no education, but she brought in a lot of money so he HAD to keep her around. After he basically told me that he knew she was an idiot & had no idea what she was doing, but money was more important than the clients safety, I left that gym as fast as my legs could carry me.

OMG TERA!!! You’ve GOT TO BE KIDDING ME!!! That gym owner should have his ass SUED … unbelievable…

Have you contacted the manager of the facility, yet? Probably would mean a lot more coming from another trainer.

no, I haven’t. As an independent I keep out of the management of the club … not my business so much, and I really don’t need to tick anyone off. I’d like to, but also don’t want them banning me or whatever if it’s unwelcome feedback … I hope that experience doesn’t cause that guy he was training to bail out on his new regime. I wouldn’t blame him if he did tho.

I hear you and I’ve witnessed it. There is a so called “trainer” where I’m at. I don’t work for the gym. I’m independent. This “trainer’ does moves that either are unsafe or will get you zero results (25 reps/super low weight style training). I cringe every time we’re in the same room. He even stole my kettle bell routine and he has no clue how to properly use kettle bells.
My rates are obviously much higher than what he’s getting. As the saying goes….you get what you pay for.
There’s a huge difference between a “trainer” and a fitness professional.
Hope the sun shines for you tomorrow :)

I am so happy that you have said this. I have this whole philosophy from what I used to take classes in the past in health, everyone needs somebody at certain times in their life. If you need a therapist go get one but you have to feel like they are your therapist and you have to feel comfortable with them. You are paying someone you need to be happy with them. I am just starting out in this field of Personal Training and trying to build up a clients. I love the people that I work with because they are willing to teach and learn and they are not there just to “do their job” they are there because they love seeing the results and helping people.
my biggest thing is that there re so many gyms and so many trainers out there. There is one right for you…they will make you work but they will always make you smile and praise your efforts. At least that is the idea I am striving for….
Thanks for the blog!!!

Yikes! This kind of thing is why I stayed away from gyms for so long and why people get turned off of fitness. What a disservice to the poor guy and others around him. Nice job calling attention to it!

Seriously?????? Truly sad, and hurting the profession for the rest of us. Grrrrr…. Thank you for being an advocate for the rest of us.

What a horror story!!
As a client, I can definitely agree that people find trainers who not only have the knowledge, but can make the client feel comfortable and good about themselves. Sometimes a trainer needs to be a teacher, a drill sergeant, sometimes a friend.
This story makes me glad I found a trainer who can be all 3 :)
