Alison’s Journey to Fitness Success
This is the story of how I lost 15 kilos and gained health, fitness, and the body I love.
Each of us has the power to create the body we want.
I had always been fit, played team sports, went to a women’s-only gym and ate a healthy diet.
Until the day I hurt my knee playing basketball.
During the 3 months recovery when I couldn’t work out, ten kilos crept on through inactivity, a plus I gained a new found love of twitter and eating comfort food.
While online I found a lot of forums and blogs, and from each I learned a little something.
Mostly, what I got was, it doesn’t matter who says what, or what I know, nothing is as important as actually doing something.
It didn’t matter to me how many grams of broccoli or how many serves of soymilk, what inspired me was that they knew the foods their bodies needed and stuck to it.
And it was irrelevant what their fitness routine was, I would never be able to copy it, what was important to me was in reading about their fitness programmes it inspires me to stick with mine, refine mine, challenge myself to improve.
I have learned if one person can do something, then so can I.
When I recovered enough strength to return to court, I noticed all of the other women on my team wore braces and bandages on knees, elbows, wrists, ankles and shoulders.
That’s when I decided there had to be a better way.
My old gym was part of my basketball membership and so I had to find a new gym – instead what I found was a whole new life.
I had always had a love of healthy food and was very active, it wouldn’t take me long to get back to my pre-injury weight … I thought.
The trainers at my new gym were very engaging. Their enthusiasm made me fall in love with fitness, whereas previously going to the gym was something I did for my sport. They were also very willing to give me lots of time to design a programme, and re-evaluate it as my fitness changed.
My diet remained pretty much unchanged: more food earlier in the day and a better balance of protein and carbs.
Training however, was a totally different thing. I took full advantage of the classes – weights, cardio combat for self-defence, bike, belly-dancing.
I also learned to love running.
Interval training has had the biggest impact on my fitness and weight. It was only when I added intervals to my running that the weight moved, and not just the 10 kilos I gained, but a little more.
My health, fitness, strength have all improved dramatically.
Some people think they will get active when they feel motivated to do so, but what I have learned is you get motivated when you are active.
