A couple of weeks ago I attended a rather riveting Nutrition Lecture, hosted by one of our local great fitness organizations: InfoFit Educators (owned by Andre Noel Potvin), and delivered by Dr. Cory Holly of The Cory Holly Institute.

I thought I’d share some of it with you, since the generous gang at InfoFit have given me permission to do so.Dr. Cory Holly

You will hear me mention, this is all stuff that I already believe in and live by.

Here’s some of the highlights of Cory’s Lecture and things YOU really NEED to know, if you’re serious about getting your nutrition right, and living a long, healthy and active life:

Commercial Cow’s Milk

The Lies (what the food industries want you to believe):

  • Good for health
  • Builds strong bones
  • Good for Athletes
  • Good source of calcium
  • Good for children
  • Good for insomnia

The Truths (what the food industries don’t want you to know):

  • Milk is much safer when consumed in a raw, unpasteurized form
  • Raw milk is better for cows, people and the environment
  • Raw milk provides the body with powerful immunological factors, enzymes and anti-microbial components
  • Raw milk should be in consumed whole to retain all the natural fat-soluble vitamins (not skim or part-skim)
  • Raw milk should come from pasture raised grass fed healthy cows, not feed lot cattle raised on CAFO’s (concentrated animal feeding operations – mainly corn)
  • Commercial milk increases risk of diabetes
  • Commercial milk acidifies the blood and actually causes a net loss of calcium
  • Commercial milk causes allergies and increases bodyfat
  • Lactose intolerance is widespread (not an issue with raw milk)
  • After being weaned not required biologically
  • Commercial milk decrease insulin sensitivity and ruins blood sugar health
  • Homogenized milk associated with increased risk of atherosclerosis
  • Pasteurization destroys enzymes, diminishes vitamin content, denatures fragile milk proteins, destroys vitamins C, B12 and B6, kills beneficial bacteria, promotes pathogens and is associated with allergies, increased tooth decay, colic in infants, growth problems in children, osteoporosis, arthritis, heart disease and cancer.
  • Calves fed pasteurized milk do poorly and many die before maturity

Infant Formula

The Lies:

  • Better than breast milk
  • More convenient
  • Freedom feeding (anyone can feed the baby anytime)

The Truths:

  • Formula causes malnourishment and anemia
  • Formula contains toxic levels of iron
  • Formula causes allergies (soy) and increases risk of respiratory infection in infants
  • Soy contain lectins known to suppress thyroid function and cause agglutination (clumping) of red blood cells
  • Soybean contains large quantities of natural toxins or “antinutrients”. First among them are potent enzyme inhibitors that block the action of trypsin and other enzymes needed for protein digestion.
  • Formula is dead and lacks many essential immune factors present in breast milk
  • Possible connection to SIDS
  • Formula contains sucrose, salt and modified fats
  • Formula contain chemical stabilizers known to be carcinogenic

Refined Sugar (sucrose, fructose)

The Lies:

  • Natural
  • Tastes good
  • Source of pure energy
  • Ties in with a high carb diet

The Truths:

  • If submitted today for FDA approval refined sugar could never pass cellular toxicology screening tests (both are cytotoxic and clastogenic)
  • Elevates risk for all-cause mortality
  • Leaches elements and trace minerals from the skeleton
  • Causes type II diabetes
  • Causes obesity and cancer
  • Associated with auto-immune disease
  • Associated with depression and mental illness
  • Connection to drug addiction due to destruction of blood sugar and insulin stability
  • Connection to increased incidence of colds, flu’s and infections
  • Concentrated sources of sugar mixed with fat and sodium associated with junk food addiction, food cravings and mental health impairment
  • Fructose known to increase build-up of uric acid, elevate triglycerides and cause insulin to become less sensitive, operative and functional

Commercial Breakfast Cereals

The Lies:

  • Breakfast of champions
  • High carb diet is best
  • Refined polished grains with synthetic toxic vitamins added are healthy
  • Morning cereal with milk and sugar tastes good and is quick and easy

The Truths:

  • High grain diets help make most people fat (excess glucose and its effect influence on insulin)
  • Grains (wheat, rye, and barley) contain gluten
  • Refined grains cause malnourishment (no bran or germ) and constipation
  • High glycemic load (diabetes and obesity)
  • Significant cause of digestive problems and allergies
  • Wheat and corn considered toxic to humans (chronic inflammation)
  • Grains contain phytates that inhibit absorption of zinc, iron and calcium
  • Cereal grains acidify the blood and body and increase the excretion of calcium

Vitamins (Dietary Supplements)

The Lies:

  • Only useful to prevent or treat classic vitamin deficiency diseases such as scurvy, beri beri, pellagra, pernicious anemia, kwashiorkor, xerophthalmia, goiter
  • Excess amounts are toxic, especially fat-soluble A & D
  • RDA provides more than adequate amount for average people

The Truths:

  • Orthomolecular medicine discovers that niacin taken is extremely large doses, along with C, zinc, B6 and EFAs can successfully treat schizophrenia and manic depression
  • Dr. Pauling & Dr. Rath discover connection between collagen erosion and heart disease (due to consuming inadequate amounts of vitamin C)
  • Virtually all mammals produce vitamin C and increase production under stress
  • Under stress humans produce toxic metabolites from adrenaline (adrenochrome) in the absence of sufficient vitamin C
  • Vitamin supplements compensate for decrease in organ reserve associated with aging
  • Vitamin supplements compensate for decrease in endogenous (internal) production of nutrients (i.e creatine or glucosamine) associated with aging
  • Vitamin D discovered to be far too low in diet (it never was toxic) recent DRI previously touted as toxic
  • B12, folic acid and B6 discovered to prevent heart disease (homocysteine)
  • Principle of Biochemical individuality proves no such thing as “average” person
  • New minerals added to essential list
  • Amino acids, vitamins, flavonoids and carotenoids known to influence gene expression
  • Vitamin therapy for sports injuries and performance
