The Consequences of Careless Weight Training
Lessee here, in the past few posts we’ve talked a bit about exercise safety, particularly during cardio, namely:
Is running in the snow smart or safe? And, how to keep yourself safe from bad guys while running alone outdoors at night …
But what about weight training?
Usually done indoors, in a public area like a gym, with lots of people around. Of if you’re like me, in the comfort of your own home.
No chance of getting grabbed and mugged …
Nice ‘n safe, right?
Well, what about the work you’re actually doing?
Are you keeping yourself safe from injuring YOURSELF?
Here’s the deal:
Sport (no matter what kind) ain’t safe.
Strength Training counts. You’ve got to take certain measures to keep yourself from getting hurt.
And, you’re probably lifting heavy, right?
If you’ve been listening to me (or anyone else out there who’s actually in the KNOW), guys AND girls, I assume that you are.
Heavy lifting is THE way to get some results from your body sculpting efforts.
But … !!! Hold ON!!
Before you get under that bar and start working the heaviest stuff you can find, exercise some caution before you exercise yourself:
KNOW YOUR LIMITS
Don’t lift heavier than you’re ACTUALLY capable of. Seems like a bit of a no-brainer. If you can’t lift it properly you’re setting yourself up to either drop it on yourself or tear something as your muscles let go against your will.
USE A SLEEVE
Using a barbell or an adjustable dumbbell? Don’t rely on your ability to keep things level to keep you safe. Take the extra 30 seconds it takes and put a sleeve on each end to keep those weights in place.
USE A SPOTTER
It’s one thing to be working out alone and working hard at a weight you’re sure you’re capable of, but if you’re going for a personal best, for pete’s sakes, if you don’t have a workout buddy, then ASK someone in the gym to spot you. And TELL them you’re going for a personal record so they’re READY and EXPECTING your early failure.
And finally…
If you’re working out ALONE at home, USE DUMBBELLS INSTEAD OF A BARBELL
Dumbbells are a lot harder to get trapped under or throttle yourself with than a big ol’ barbell. Hey, if you get trapped under a barbell when you’re alone, you might just wind up in serious trouble trapped for hours, or you could make what might have started out as a small injury much worse … or you could wind up dead.
And besides, you can’t use one arm to compensate for the other arm, so you’ll probably get a more balanced workout anyway.
Thinking you’re tough enough, you know what you’re doing, and all this doesn’t apply to you?
Fine … but first, before you go off all confident and cocky, let me try to convince you. Check out what happens to these guys:
THIS guy didn’t get hurt … Why? Cuz he has some DAMN good spotters … he kept himself safe by making sure he had help …
See where I’m going with this now?
So, C’MON!! Use your smarts out there.
All your carelessness might get you is an extended rest you didn’t plan for or want.
And that’s no way to get to your goals, right?
So, Stay Safe.
I’d hate it if you got hurt. And so would you …
Have a fit, fun and fantastic day.

This was the best article I’ve read from you so far. I personally prefer dumbbells as well. When I use barbbell I’m very careful, however after watching these videos I will probably also get a spotter for the last rep.
Have a nice day,
Greg
